Circa 1880 Home in Sullivan's Island, SC Preserved by Lowcountry Foundation Repair
Challenge
Cary M. had purchased “The Palmettos House” of Sullivan’s Island, SC. The home dates back to circa 1880 and is considered to be one of the classic beach cottages from years gone. After purchasing the house, it didn’t take long for Cary to realize it was “crooked”. The foundation piers under the home had sunk and the house became lopsided.
Cary wanted to preserve the old home, but he didn’t know what to do. Rather than replacing or shimming the piers, he called the experts in foundation repair, Lowcountry Foundation Repair.
Solution
Lowcountry Foundation Repair recommended installing a SmartJack System to immediately stabilize the foundation and lift the lopsided part of the house. SmartJacks are steel tubes made of galvanized steel that won’t rust. Each tube is custom-cut to the home and is designed so it can be adjusted over time. SmartJacks lift sagging or undersized beams, usually in the crawl space. A single SmartJack is capable of providing an additional 60,000 lbs of support to the frame of a building.
“The Palmettos House” needed 15 SmartJacks to stabilize the sinking foundation. The installation crew was able to help Cary preserve his home and bring the floor back to level. If Cary is ever concerned about the floor again, Lowcountry Foundation Repair can go back to the house and make adjustments if needed.
