When crawl spaces aren't encapsulated, the humid air can allow mold to grow on organic material such as wooden joists and subfloors.

Moisture Around the Foundation Walls

The plastic liner previously installed didn't keep moisture from wicking up the foundation walls. Nor did it prevent the joists and subfloor from absorbing the humid air.
