Microbial Growth in Hilton Head Island, SC Comes to a Stop
Challenge
Jim and Sharon L. of Hilton Head Island, SC had a moisture problem in their crawl space. The excessive moisture created the perfect environment for microbial growth on the subfloor. Odors permeated the home and the couple worried about the mold spreading throughout their home.
Evidence of mold was noted on ducts, soil and water lines in the crawl space. The moisture had not weakened the joists, main beam or subfloor; the structural integrity of the home had not been jeopardized.
Solution
Dan Friesen, of Lowcountry Foundation Repair, inspected the crawl space and the floor above. Dan explained the moisture problem to the homeowners and recommended a Complete CleanSpace Encapsulation of the crawl space.
The system is designed to significantly reduce the moisture in the environment by sealing the earth from the crawl space, preventing moisture vapor from getting to the home’s foundation. Additionally, the system would come with an Energy-Star-rated dehumidifier to maintain a healthy crawl space environment.
The seven crawl space vents were sealed with CleanSpace Vent Covers. CleanSpace linear, 2,570 sq. ft. was installed over the dirt and crawl space. The concrete piers and crawl space walls were wrapped with linear as well.
The crawl space walls were insulated with 32 panels of SilverGlo.
A SaniDry Sedona dehumidifier was installed in the crawl space to remove moisture from the air, pumping it to a SmartDrain for final removal. The last component of the system was the installation of three EverLast CleanSpace doors.
With the crawl space completely sealed off from the earth, Jim and Sharon could rest easy knowing microbial growth would destroy the foundation of their home.
